Sam Browne was a British army officer who served in India during the late 19th century. He is most well-known for inventing the Sam Browne belt, a type of officer's leather belt with a diagonal strap that crosses over the chest and shoulder. The purpose of the belt was to distribute the weight of a sword or firearm more evenly, making it more comfortable to wear for long periods of time. The Sam Browne belt became a standard part of British military dress and is still used by many armed forces around the world today. Browne's invention earned him the rank of Colonel and he was later knighted for his contributions to military equipment design.
